Why take Joy Seriously?

Have you ever sat and contemplated what joy means to you? Have you sat and asked yourself between 0-10 what level of satisfaction you have right now in your life or do you not even have time for that? Recent studies showed that 79% of employees are experiencing levels of burnout….. taking joy seriously could just be what you need to avoid those issues.

I believe success comes from the feeling of Joy & Satisfaction of being able to achieve your desires.  That comes from the power of clarity, of knowing your self then knowing your desires. However in the business of life we forget to ask am I still heading towards what I desire, am I even enjoying what I am doing, am I satisfied, what’s important? Chasing the wrong things leads to lack of motivation, burn out, stress and finally we give up.

What if Cultivating Joy was the solution to success, so instead of getting to that stage you could go out laughing, knowing that you lived a life that was full, full up, content, a life full of great experiences, great moments and of course fun? To die feeling you did your best or maybe even made an impact. 

Perhaps like me beforehand you have gotten stuck trying to follow the money, achieve success, work hard make money for the future and think that one day you will stop retire and decide to enjoy yourself because you will then have time to do all you want to do, but as you get older you begin to wonder if that will happen. Time is a commodity, do you think that maybe you are wasting time waiting to enjoy yourself because as you get older your health usually deteriorates and then you don’t have the mind or the body to do any of those things, and the way the retirement plans are going you may not even have the money!!!

Does doing it that way feel satisfying, are you feeling fullfilled (filled up, full of…..)? Perhaps you are filling your bank account, achieving things and then finding that you want more because you realise there is something missing. You have an insatiable appetite and never feel satisfied. Have you ever thought that that may be because you have been searching outside yourself for happiness, what you perceive to be missing and instead what you are looking for is an inside job.

Stress after all is the bodies response to a painful situation, to overpushing yourself to achieve or when facing challenge. It is a message to tell you that you are not enjoying where you are at, what you are doing or how you are doing it. There are other emotions that do that to, such as anger or frustration, and if felt on a consistent basis can lead to the body stressing when we do nothing about it. So isn’t it time to start listening to yourself and your body and start asking yourself are you enjoying your life, what you are doing, and if not how you could find more joy and what gives you joy? It doesn’t have to be a drastic change, it might just be that you need to take a long look at what you have been trying to achieve and if is working and if not is it time to do it differently.

Maybe instead joy could be your objective and your purpose. What if joy became your boss guiding you, and that you made an effort or worked hard to find that, and in the process you realised that you began to love life whatever you were doing. Have you ever thought that that may have been the missing ingredient.

Taking Joy seriously, not a person, not life, not a thing, not others but an energy an emotion…. Sounds crazy doesn’t it? A concept is crazy, it’s an abstract idea or notion that often innovates and can’t always be explained. It challenges your thinking to take a different view on life.

My parents and the generation before us (i’m 47) were workers, they had to work to rebuild the country after the war and were taught that working hard is how you achieve success. It seems to be that we have not updated our views on that. The younger generation have started, have been trying to update our views but have been coming against a lot of resistance because the transition from working hard to earn money rather then enjoying hard to earn money has not become mainstream as yet. We are beginning to see it with all those insta success stories of people travelling taking pictures of themselves enjoying life and getting paid for it. It has not been an easy journey for them . They have however worked hard to get there, worked hard at joy.

I myself had a lot of limits around the concept of understanding that I could actually work at enjoying myself, find what gives me joy and be good at it and get paid for it, a lot of guilt to deal with. I through experience have understood that joy attracts more money because you find that when you have a job you really love and really enjoy the money doesn’t matter. Research shows that most people don’t work for the money but to feel valued and feel they are contributing. They take lower pay rates when they feel that the company has got their back.

I used to think that money was my goal and found it hard to achieve, chasing the wrong thing. As soon as I realised I had it the wrong way around and began to see what I wanted to experience and cultivating and finding the joy I began to feel abundant and that feeling attracted the money. We don’t need those extra holidays to go away and enjoy ourselves, because we are enjoying ourselves here and now. The holiday instead becomes a bonus a way to keep the energy flowing, because joy after all is an energy a vibration.

What I am saying is not all airy fairy, science has begun to prove it. Also if we look at the pareto principle, founded by an Italian man, it tells us that 20% of what we do creates 80% of effects in our life. This was studied when they realised that 80% of the land was owned by 20% of the population. They went on to study this phenonemon in business, 80% business results come from reate is psychology and 20% rational, logical processes that create the results. This may then be the same for psychology. 80% of your happiness comes from 20% of what you do to cultivate it, how you think, how you feel and what makes you happy??? This means that if you could find 20% more joy in your life, the oppotssite to stress, it would have an amazing knock on effect. In a days work 20% would only be 84mins. Imagine 84 minutes spent on joy what that means for your daily life and business and imagine if you actually worked at what you enjoyed, wow!!!

Taking joy seriously

is a hard concept to grasp because its a concept that challenges your

thinking and challenges the way we have been living for years.

However as the figures show, many people are becoming more and more

stressed trying to achieve happiness rather then being happy. Why is

that, because they seem to be looking outside themselves to find it

rather then go inside to find it, to find the joy that has always

been there but they have overlooked

Stress is the bodies

that all lead to stress when they are felt over and over again and we

do nothing about it. So isn’t it time to start listening to

yourself and your body and start asking yourself are you enjoying

your life, what you are doing, and if not how you could find more joy

and what gives you joy? It doesn’t have to be a drastic change, it

might just be that you need to take a long look at what you have been

trying to achieve and if is working and if not is it time to do it


.let me explain why I think that you ‘should’ take joy seriously, and why it ‘should’ be the only ‘should’ you ‘should’ have in your life. 

What are we really searching for in life? to be happy, to find satisfaction, be joyous We search to feel fulfilled, filled up, complete, a feeling of contentment in ourselves and what we do or live.  Joy may just be that feeling you are looking for that brings all of those.


It is hard to define joy (I talk about that in another article). To keep it simple for now, Joy is an emotion, an energy, a vibration. It can appear when no-one is looking, but is usually always there. It can be cultivated like a seed to grow and become rooted. So instead of searching outside of you to find that satisfaction, contentment and happiness, you go looking within. Where does satisfaction come from? Mostly from joyfully accomplishing what you desire,from loving who you are and what you do. Feeling like you are valued and sharing that with those around you. It comes from a creating a job and life you admire and are proud of and a feeling of being full. Full up to the brim. What if you could be filled up and full of joy and attract all those things you wanted?

I became an expert at getting by with very little whilst at the same time starting my business, one of the biggest lessons I learnt, you don’t have to have lots of money to start a business, just be creative. Its all about the mindset and saving money in alternative ways. I found the following things very helpful. Although they may seem simple and logical we very often forget to do them. So here are my best 5 tips:

1.Reduce insignificant insurances and bills by relooking at what you are paying for

How often do you sit down and relook at your insurance policies, your telephone contract, car insurance or internet expenses? Sometimes we get complacent taking them out when we have the money, getting used to paying them automatically every month via transfer and then forgetting about them. They renew automatically and we may not really need them. Check what you are paying for, or reduce the policy, most insurance policies have different levels and the basic may be enough. Same with the internet and telephone, there are so many companies vying for your business they are giving such good deals. Look around and you may save at least 30/40$ a month on them. Look at what you are willing to sacrifice, and your priorities, or even things such as a smaller car. Don’t forget even the daily coffee adds up, once a day at $5 is $1820 savings a year, how about reducing it to 3 times a week or taking your own!!

2. Gather up your gold!!

I realised that I had a lot of old jewellery lying around that I hadn’t warn for years. Gold is a commodity and at the time the value of gold was really good and so I decided to go and sell it. I was in France and there are plenty of jewellery shops that weigh the gold and will give you the current value. If you don’t have gold or silver to sell, perhaps there are other items of value in the house that you can sell, things you keep for one day and that day never comes.

3. Work on your money beliefs to be able to receive in delicious and delightful ways

We often think that money has to come from a job or that we have to “earn” it to receive it, and that we actually have to have money to buy things instead of being given them or asking for them. Not all things that are valuable have to be paid for. What I mean by that is to understand your mindset and beliefs about what’s possible. When I began to open my mind about how I could get money instead of working for it and receive things instead of paying for them, all of a sudden I got a refund for something such as tax, I received a gift of money from family, people would invite me to dinner and pay for me. I exchanged services for something I needed and found there were so many things out there for free that I had never discovered. I found free networking events, free business support, free masterclasses about facebook, about business planning about everything I needed to start. I boosted both my visibility and business sense to start attracting clients all without paying a cent (or maybe just petrol, but if you have a bike you can even save on that). Maybe write a receiving journal, as the saying says, what you focus on is what you get. If you focus on what you are receiiving and grateful you tend to get more!!!

I also read books to increase my knowledge of how others did it. What did other successful people do, how did they change there mindset. A few books that helped were “The secret of a millionaires mind by THarv Eker, and books by Napolean Hill. However don’t just read them, act on them, knowledge and action brings results.

4. Work on the emotions & stress that come up through play, calm & joy

Money can bring up a lot of stress and difficult emotions, especially in times when we are transitioning to new things and we don’t have the financial security or a consistent client base yet, or even a support network. It can create a lack mentality. You make decisions from fear and lack, take clients that don’t suit you and make pressurised decisions that you wouldn’t if you felt that you had options. We always have options but we forget that when money is tight. I have a myriad of tools that I use with my clients for stress but a few different ideas include learning to meditate and use mindfulness. It floods the system with destressing hormones and begins to balance them for both motivation and calm. You begin to get more in touch with what you need.

Join online support networks to share your struggles. I use breathing techniques and EFT tapping – Emotional Freedom technique that is a way to release stressful emotions through the body. Most of all I went out and had fun, continued to socialise and do exercise, surfing was my release. Fun and play are researched to allow us to increase our dopamine levels, serotonin and endorphins that are known as the happy pills, and you certainly don’t need money to go out and laugh and have fun.

5.Ask the universe, ask for help, visualise and pray

I was such a terrible culprit for trying to do it all alone and felt weak for asking for help and support, to show that I couldn’t run a business by myself, that I had all the answers. That is so wrong and it is an attitude of the ego. If you get out and ask for help people are often willing to give you advise or referrals or print things for you or do some graphic design for free. The universe can also help you if you pray and ask empowering questions. The brain functions in mysterious ways and when you start asking how can I or what would it take to the brain begins to come up with inspired ideas and thoughts and then you then bump into people and books or answers to what you need. Its all about energy. the energy you are putting out and the way you feel. Learning how to do that and to see and feel and visualise what you would like to see can be very beneficial to understanding the possiblity.

The above are are simple techniques that perhaps need more depth and consideration and things to learn.
